PACIFIC SEAFOOD CONDEMNS ALLEGED HUMAN RIGHTS MISCONDUCT
WITHIN SEAFOOD INDUSTRY
Portland, Ore. – April 23, 2008
– Pacific
Seafood,
a family owned seafood company based in Portland, Ore.,
echoes the comments made by the National Fisheries Institute (NFI)
regarding claims made by The Solidarity Center about potential
mistreatment of workers and child labor practices internationally in
the shrimp industry. Pacific
Seafood, like the NFI, takes the accusations of mistreatment of
workers or other human rights abuses very seriously.
Until the investigation into the matter is complete and Pacific
Seafood can be assured that the processing facilities named in the
report are meeting and/or exceeding the company’s standards, all
purchasing from these named packers will cease.
Pacific Seafood has only purchased a handful of containers from
Bangladesh
in recent years, but will review all its vendors in the region to
determine if there is any merit to the allegations contained in the
report.
For
more information about the position of the NFI and details of the
report please visit the NFI Web site at: http://www.aboutseafood.com.
