Seafood Plants Celebrate Successful Completion of Wastewater Project at
May 25 Dedication
After
nearly five years and millions of dollars of private and public
investment, a new wastewater outfall pipe will preserve 250 local jobs
Warrenton
,
Ore.
– May. 25, 2006 – Since 2001, Pacific Coast Seafoods Company and Pacific Surimi Co., Inc.
have been working with partners in local, state and federal government
to resolve issues relating to the company’s historic discharge of
fish processing wastewater into the
Skipanon
River
. On May 25th at 12:00
noon the company and local community leaders will dedicate a new
wastewater outfall line to the deep water of the
Columbia River
which represents the end of the companies’ wastewater problems.
“We’re excited to dedicate the new
outfall pipe and put this whole issue behind us so our team members
can focus on work and we can once again operate our Surimi company,”
said Craig Urness, representative of the Pacific Seafood Group of
companies. “Without the support of this community, the State and its
leaders at all levels,
Pacific
Coast
and Pacific Surimi would have closed their doors in Warrenton in 2001.
We are glad to be able to continue our operations here.”
The new outfall pipe is a joint
public/private partnership between Pacific Coast Seafoods Company,
Pacific Surimi Co., Inc. and the City of
Warrenton
, which had a similarly constraining wastewater discharge issue.
Funding for the pipe was made possible by the generous support
of state and federal agencies including the Oregon Department of
Economic and Community Development and the Environmental Protection
Agency. The EPA grant was
secured by United States Senator Gordon Smith and Congressman David
Wu.
After the dedication ceremony, tours will
be offered of the
Warrenton
High School
fish hatchery and local watershed restoration projects.
Both are beneficiaries of recent grants by Pacific Coast
Seafoods Company/Pacific Surimi Co., Inc. to settle past wastewater
violations with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
